The Full Wolf Moon (Full Moon in Cancer)
Merry Christmas! Happy Holidays! May you be feeling loved however you celebrate the festivals of miracles that abound during these shortest days of the year. 🌟
This afternoon/evening, we experience the last Full Moon of 2023. (The Moon at 4º58’ in her home sign of Cancer opposes the Sun in Capricorn at 5:33pm MST.) Called the Wolf Moon, she signified times past when the northern reaches of our planet were blanketed in the first thick layers of winter snow, and the wild wolves roamed free on the plains. As Mama Gaia balances her energy in ways that we humans don’t quite understand, most of us in the northern hemisphere are experiencing the dark of winter without the merciful snow reflecting the illuminations of the bright moon.
This is a moon of stillness – a frozen lake surrounded by trees, small animals burrowed underground, books we long to be read in the comfort of a warm hearth, surrounded by the people we love most in the world.
Humanity has become uncomfortable will stillness, so we create unsustainable schedules of stress, activity, and consumption to distract us from taking a deeper look inside and outside of ourselves. Might we discover a wolf within or out in the wild, wild world? Sometimes it seems easier to be out in the world and complain about what we see than to do the inner work!
(Fortunately, I know that many of you have been doing nothing BUT the inner work for a while now… I salute you and encourage you to enjoy the moments of stillness as well!)
This full moon is all about nurturing and family, when we gather around the home fires drinking broth, where we ancestrally conserved our energy to conserve the resources and food meant to last until spring. Of course, most of us don’t live that way anymore, although the nearness to the Christmas holiday means that you potentially have family around. (And you might be ready to send them home too! 😝)
Indeed, most of us have gotten away from the rhythms and rituals of the seasons and family life. Instead, our culture has created an unsustainable model, where we buy raspberries from Mexico in December and stay up all hours with artificial light (especially from our phones). We are expected to work 8 hours or more a day in winter and 8 hours or more a day in summer. Stopping or taking a break is seen as a weakness.
This full moon asks us to release ourselves – even momentarily – from the monotonous chaos of 21st-century life and lean in our ancestral roots. How can you nurture your own heart, your family, and our planet, and still create boundaries and structures that support your heart, your family, and our planet to cultivate more ease and more resources throughout the year? What is being illuminated for you?
The upcoming astrology of 2024 is encapsulated by one word: BOUNDARIES. As a collective, we are going to be asked to set boundaries in really powerful yet uncomfortable ways around our sovereignty, our identities, our communities, our resources, and the Earth. I’ll be sharing more about this energy throughout the next 13 lunar cycles.
Loving deeply can be messy. We can leak energy without even realizing that we have a “hole” somewhere. Today’s Wolf Moon encourages you to explore where you might need to create boundaries and structures around how much you give to whom, so that the roots of your own heart can always be nurtured and sustained.
I love you,
Jennifer
