The Dragon's Revolution: A Metaphor for Inner and Outer Change
At the heart of Aquarius energy lies the concept of revolution—a radical upheaval of the status quo in favor of a brighter, more enlightened future. As the dragon symbolizes power, strength, and transcendence in various mythologies and cultures, so too does the Aquarian spirit embody the fierce determination to overcome obstacles and forge new paths forward… even –and especially – when it’s not “popular.”
Think Elon Musk, Taylor Swift, Albert Einstein, and even Mother Mary, all of whom have their North Node in Aquarius in their birth charts. (Want to know more about your own North Node? Book an astrology and health reading HERE.)
But what exactly do dragons have to do with Aquarius and the collective’s drama? In Chinese astrology and culture, the dragon is revered as an auspicious symbol of wisdom and divine protection. However, it's also a creature that elicits fear and awe in equal measure, a testament to its untamed and unpredictable nature.
Many emperors In China banned citizens from practicing any of the dragon postures in Qigong out of fear that their reverence for the emperor would diminish in comparison to their newfound sense of autonomy. They feared that these Qigong postures would empower people to be too powerful from within, thus negating the emperor's authority.
Likewise, in modern times, look at what has happened over the last 25 years with the Falun Gong movement in China. Initially it became very popular because it not only represented health in the form of Qigong, it was a spiritual movement that empowered self-determination. Any practice that promotes individuation has always been a threat to the suppression of free will and individuality and to the status quo. Falun gong practitioners in China are still severely tortured in jail in China because “it was very difficult, almost impossible, for the guards to subdue [their] independent thought.” (From Yang Jianli, a former prisoner of conscience and founder of Initiatives for China in a 2019 article from The Diplomat.)
In many ways, the dragon serves as a metaphor for the inner and outer revolutions that define the Aquarian archetype. The mythical beast must be tamed and harnessed by the dragon rider; and we must we confront our inner demons and fears to navigate the external challenges, stressors, and confrontations that life throws our way.
The dragon also can prevent us from getting stuck and going in circles – the downside of “revolution” – and move us faster and closer to our destination in the future. It’s a balance between being mindful in present moment and envisioning future utopia.
Aquarius: The Rebel with a Cause
At the core of Aquarius energy lies a deep-seated desire for freedom, autonomy, and individuality. Ruled by Uranus, the sky god, Aquarian energy cultivates natural-born rebels who refuse to be confined by societal norms or expectations. They march to the beat of their own drum, unafraid to challenge authority or question the status quo.
But Aquarius isn’t only about rebellion for rebellion's sake—it's about using our unique gifts and talents to effect positive change in the world. As the Greek goddess Pallas Athena embodies the strategic and visionary qualities of Aquarius, so too does Aquarius ask us to see the bigger picture and envision a better future for humanity.
In its highest frequencies, Aquarius demonstrates the power of ONE voice within the collective: People with “revolutionary” ideas and ideals, like Gandhi and Joan of Arc, must be willing to stand alone to bring lasting change. They must believe so much in their ideals that they are willing to die for them. This takes great courage and a resounding voice. And yet they attract followers, community, and friends to bring lasting change if those ideas are aligned with the higher ideals of Aquarius: freedom, humility, integrity, friendship, empathy, rebirth, and rapture.
Navigating the Collective Drama: Lessons from the Dragon Rider
In a world fraught with conflict, chaos, and uncertainty, it's all too easy to get swept up in the drama of the collective. Whether it's the culture of a toxic work environment, hierarchical social policies that divide and segregate, or the relentless barrage of negativity on social media, rising above the turbulent winds of societal expectations and stressors can often feel like an impossible uphill battle.
But what if, instead of trying to slay our dragons, we learned to ride them? What if we embraced the chaos and conflict both within and outside ourselves with the same courage and resilience as a seasoned dragon rider?
To rise above the collective drama with grace and poise, it's essential to cultivate self-awareness and emotional intelligence. By recognizing our own triggers and vulnerabilities, we can develop the inner strength and resilience needed to withstand the winds of fear without being swept away by them.
In today's world, fear seems to pervade every aspect of society. It's easy to get sucked into the vortex of negativity, but you don't have to succumb to it. Instead, confront your fears head-on and strengthen your resolve. A dragon rider builds trust and rapport with their majestic beast. You, too, can establish a symbiotic relationship with your inner power.
As I’ll discuss in a future post this lunar cycle, practicing mindfulness and meditation can be invaluable tools for keeping ourselves from getting sucked into low frequencies of fear, groupthink, and judgment. By staying present and grounded in the moment, we can observe our thoughts and emotions without becoming entangled in them, allowing us to respond to challenging situations with clarity and composure. Reacting to anger, stress and fear with anger, stress, and fear will only serve to fry your nervous system over time, resulting at best in fatigue, depression, and anxiety.
To ride your dragon, you must first connect with your own values and ideals. As discussed in my blog on Pluto in Aquarius, knowing your own principles is crucial in a world where societal pressures can easily lead you astray. Aquarius embodies the frequency of the individual within the collective—a reminder that your voice matters amidst the chorus of others. You can’t speak your truth if you don’t know what your truth is.
Moreover, setting healthy boundaries is essential for protecting our mental and emotional well-being in the face of collective drama. By clearly communicating our needs and limits to others, we can prevent ourselves from being drawn into toxic dynamics and instead maintain healthy relationships based on mutual respect and understanding.
That might mean continuing to communicate your values until “they” get it, or it might mean moving onto new relationships and situations where you feel heard and seen. This doesn’t mean separating from people who have different beliefs or values from you. It means not sacrificing your own values to seek approval or feel loved.
Conclusion: Soaring to New Heights with Aquarian Energy
The next time you find yourself getting sucked into the collective drama of fear, stress, and division, remember to look your dragon in the eye. With empathy and determination, you can rise above the chaos and soar to new heights.
As we embark on the Year of the Dragon (February 9-January 29, 2025) and journey through the Aquarius Lunar Cycle (February 9-March 9, 2024), let us remember the wisdom of the dragon rider. Let us embrace the revolutionary spirit of Aquarius and harness the power of our inner dragon to rise above the status quo with grace, courage, and resilience. And may we, like the dragon riders of old, soar to new heights of consciousness and understanding, ushering in a brighter, more enlightened future for all beings on this planet we call home.
And who knows? Maybe one day, we'll all be riding our dragons together, having created a new era of peace and harmony on the New Earth.
